A Hero at Ground Zero | ||
A Hero at Ground Zero (Source: Vending & OCS, Nov-Dec 2001, pages 40-41) There are numerous stories concerning the bravery exhibited by people during the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Add to them the experience of Robert (Bob) Gayer, executive vice-president of coffee service and vending, Barrie House Coffee & Tea, Yonkers, N.Y. Preparing for a business call from his Long Island home, he learned of the disaster and sped to the scene to volunteer his services. He joined the firefighters on September 11 and stayed for 12 hours. He returned on September 13 for a stint which lasted 17 1/2 hours and included participating in a search and rescue mission that took him five floors below the Twin Towers. On September 13, he brought supplies furnished by Corporate Coffee and U.S. Coffee to provide refreshments to the workers digging in the rubble. While with a police team, he helped apprehend a looter who was seeking to rob a jewelry store. Bob's heroism did not go unnoticed as he has received a citation from Charles E. Schumer, United States Senator from New York. It reads: "Senator Charles E. Schumer is pleased to recognize Robert Gayer... Who on the morning of September 11th, bravely traveled to Ground Zero to lend much needed assistance in one of our city's darkest hours. Robert is a shining example of the bravery and resolve of our great American heroes." Retelling his heroic actions to a local newspaper, Bob literally shrugged them off by remarking that "they needed me - and I went." But for the country, and for those who know him in the vending/OCS industry, Bob is truly a hero at Ground Zero. | |||
